Useful Insights To Discover About Plum Tomatoes

by James Wickens

Many people have plum tomatoes at home and they even use them as a vital part of their meals. Their small and medium sizes and shape that resemble an egg make them an eye catcher and head turner for those who can see them for the first time. These tomatoes are fleshy and have fewer seeds compared with their other varieties. They have less amount of water making them a common choice for making homemade tomato paste and sauces.

Plum Tomatoes and WatermelonThe word ‘plum’ carries different variations. You may encounter terms like ‘Roma,’ San Marzano, La Rossa, Black Plum Paste, and more. San Marzano is a part of sauce, saladette, and past tomatoes which usually grow in Italy yet available in other specialty shops. As you go to different cities and countries across the globe, you will learn that there are different types of tomatoes out there.

A plum tomato may come in the season, but there is nothing to worry at all. You can find some in their canned varieties although you have to be able to find the specific store that offers one. The canned product of this type of tomato may not be as fresh as the real one; it is still a better option rather than other fruits. They also come in a variety of colors such as deep red or yellow.

How To Store The Tomatoes

If you want to keep the freshness of plum tomatoes, you have to keep them away from direct sunlight. At the same time, you cannot just store them in the refrigerator. Excess sunlight or light source will ripen them easily. Moreover, a cold temperature causes the tomatoes to lose their original flavor. However, if you have to keep them refrigerated to get rid of mushiness, you can place them in a door compartment. It can help extend their usability for a couple of days.

What makes these tomatoes popular is that they are ideal for canning. They can be grown well whether in containers or a garden. Sometimes, they just scatter on the soil, and they will grow even without giving much care and attention.

If you want to use these tomatoes for different purposes, there are different things to consider to get the maximum level of taste and flavor from them. These can be sautéed, stewed, broiled and grilled. Others will simply slice and eat them fresh although some include them in soups and stews. Another thing to remember about its use is to prepare any recipes with tomatoes in non-reactive cookware.

Every time you make a sauce, consider using the ripe ones since they give the best taste and flavors. The peak season for harvesting a plum tomato is from August to October, although it is available all throughout the year. Those varieties found on local places often have improved texture and flavor. If it is not available and you try to substitute another type of tomato, the result can turn out to be a bit watery.
