Garden Basics- Weed Control Methods

by James Wickens

Controlling weeds in the garden seems to be a never-ending process. This task is one of the most difficult things to do as certain weeds require special caution and attention when uprooting and removing them from the garden. Learn how to control weeds with the following tips.

There are two ways you can remove weeds from your garden- manually removing the weeds or using a chemical herbicide to kill the weed. Manual methods can be difficult as you must ensure all of the weed’s roots have been eliminated.

Chemical control herbicides are often used as it is easier and typically more effective. This method destroys weeds at their root. There are a number of herbicides on the market. These herbicides can destroy the most common weeds to the hardest to kill weeds. As long as you follow the instructions on the label, you should be able to destroy any weed that enters your garden or water feature.

Chemical herbicides allow you to conservatively treat based on the type of weed that has invaded your lawn or water feature. If you are using a chemical herbicide in a body of water, such as a pond, you should be aware of the aquatic species living in your pond as they could be affected when the herbicide is use.

Additionally, using herbicides in water can cause restrictions, depending on the type of herbicide used. Therefore, you should always consult an expert when using an herbicide in a body of water as it can affect the plant life and animal life living in the water. There are a number of aquatic plant herbicides on the market, including Harvester, Fluridone, Shore Klear, Cutrine Plus, Aquacide Pellets, Aquathol Super K and Hyrdrothol.

The two safest herbicides for fish ponds are Fluridone and Aquacide Pellets. Shore Klear is used to control many of the weeds found along the shore, including cattails, reeds, rushes, smartweeds and floating plants, including lotus and water lilies. Shore Klear is applied directly to the plant rather than in the water. Aquacide Pellets are used for broadleaf weeds, Coontail and Milfoil.

Other chemical herbicides like Diquat should be used to treat emergent weeds. To protect livestock, allow a waiting period of 14 days before allowing livestock to consume the water or using the water to irrigate your crops.

For best results, you must know when to use chemical herbicides. You want to apply the herbicide when the weeds are actively growing, the water temperature is cool and the decay of weeds is slow. For this reason, most experts recommend applying chemical herbicides in the early spring. Opt for a calm sunny morning to apply the herbicide. Finally, read the instructions to ensure you apply the herbicide properly. This will help minimize the damage to the ecosystem in your pond and help keep your costs down.

Weeds in ponds can be problematic. A chemical herbicide specifically made for weed control in bodies of water can help minimize and control weeds.
